Hackathon Participation
Hackathon Participation
Now that I’ve registered for the hackathon, what’s next?
  1. Join the FanHack 2024 Hackathon Slack Channel to access exclusive event channels, receive event updates, and connect with the rest of the community
  1. Go through your Participant’s Checklist.
  1. Equip yourself with the tools, tips and tricks to bring your hackathon project to the next level by taking a look at Resources.
  1. Attend the pre-hackathon workshop and ideation sessions!

Who is eligible to participate in the hackathon?
We welcome all Fanatics employees with ideas or the passion to innovate to participate!

Can non-developers/engineers participate in the hackathon?
Yes! However, having basic programming knowledge and skills could increase the chances of your team winning as a functioning MVP is required for project submission. Thus, teams are strongly recommended to have at least one individual who can build/code a prototype.

Who can I contact if I have any questions?
Contact the organising team on the official Hackathon Slack Channel for further clarifications!
Teams
Teams
What is the total number of members I can have on my team?
While solo hackers are allowed, you are highly encouraged to build and submit your project in teams of 3 to 5 members (including yourself).

How can I go about forming my team?
If you’re looking to join / form a team or to recruit additional team members, fret not — check out our Team Formation Guide. Once you have confirmed your team, each team member will need to submit your team details via our Team Info Update Form.

Can I belong to more than 1 team?
No. You can only belong to 1 team.

Do all members of my team have to register for the event?
Yes! Only registered individuals are eligible to participate and collect the prizes. Please ensure that all members of your team have registered accordingly.

Project Submission
Project Submission
Can my team submit more than 1 project for the hackathon?
No, each team is only allowed to submit 1 project for the hackathon.

Can my team submit our project under more than 1 hackathon theme?
Teams can only submit their project for 1 of the 3 hackathon themes, even if their project is applicable across multiple themes.
Our advice is to frame your project clearly for 1 theme, as the narrative of your pitch is also a key judging component!

What if my team has more than 1 project that we’d really like to build and submit for this event?
In this case, we’d recommend the team to be split, and submit the projects under different team names and with different team members in each team. However, do note that there cannot be repeated members across teams and that prize won will only be awarded to the specific team with its registered members.

What happens to the projects developed during the hackathon after the event?
Participants will wholly own the intellectual property rights to the projects they develop during the hackathon. There are no obligations for participants to share, license, or commercialize their projects. Your creations are yours to explore and develop as you see fit.
Prize Administration
Prize Administration
Who will I be expecting the prize money to be administered by?
The Fanatics team will be responsible for prize administration after the winners’ announcement. Do keep a look out for an email from the Organizing Team to go through the necessary verification process before prize money can be disbursed to the winning teams.

What currency will the prize money and bounties be in?
All prize money will strictly be in USD only.

Project Dos & Don'ts
  • If you are using an existing project, make sure you give credit to the project.
  • If someone has helped you with your project or contributed code to your project, make sure you add them as one of you team members so that they can get the credit for their contribution in your projects.
  • Make sure you check the license of any public repository before you use it for your own project and give the appropriate credit to that repository and the creator in your repo too.
  • When submitting your project for the hackathon, make sure whatever you upload is completely created by you or you have the right to use the same. This also includes images, demo videos that are created as part of the project.
  • Make sure you have the permission to use any music, footage, images or any copyright material in your submission. Else, please stick to not using such material and do not upload the same.
  • For the complete list of Project Rules, please refer to the hackathon rules.

The Fresh Code Rule
All teams should strictly adhere to the Fresh Code Rule.
What must be done during the hackathon:
  • All code and required items submitted as part of the Submission must be written/created during the Hacking period from 23 April, 8:30am PDT to 26 April, 11:00am PDT, even if the Participant and/or their Hackathon Team are building on an existing project.
  • Other than that, almost anything goes and participants can use any coding languages or open-source libraries as part of their submission.
During judging:
  • Judges will assess only codes submitted during the official hacking period from 23 April, 8:30am PDT to 26 April, 11:00am PDT. This applies even if you are building a part of a bigger project that already existed prior to the hackathon.
  • Judges will only evaluate Submissions and code developed during the hacking period from 23 April, 8:30am PDT to 26 April, 11:00am PDT. Submissions that are built upon an existing project will be evaluated based only on the improvements and/or updates made to the relevant existing software, the Submission Requirements set out in the “Submission Requirements” section of this guide, and/or lines of code during the hacking period from 23 April, 8:30am PDT to 26 April, 11:00am PDT.

Refer to the hackathon rules for full details on the Fresh Code Rule, Project Rules, Submission Requirements for Using Existing Projects, and more.
